EU urges Asean to persuade Myanmar to give access to humanitarian aid

    (IANS)

The European Union (EU) has called on China, India and the 10 Asean nations to persuade the authorities in Myanmar to co-operate with the international community in the humanitarian relief work in the wake of Cyclone Nargis in that country.

EU development ministers met for a special session here Tuesday to assess the humanitarian situation in Myanmar, EuAsiaNews reported.
They urged the Myanmar authorities to offer practical and logistical support to the UN-led relief work.
The Asean countries are Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
In a joint statement, they urged the Myanmar authorities to 'offer free and unfettered access to international humanitarian experts and to take urgent action to facilitate the flow of aid'.
The EU commissioner for development and humanitarian aid, Louis Michel, is expected to travel to that country soon.
The European Commission pledged last week to give 2 million euros (about $3 million) in emergency aid to Burma.
