Pak parliamentarian says cricket must not suffer due to corruption

A Pakistani parliamentarian has said that it was the right decision to continue with the national cricket team's tour of England despite the embarrassment caused by a 150,000-pound 'spot-fixing' scandal.

"My personal thing is that we should go after the corrupt and corruption. We should not go after cricket, it must go on," The Daily Times quoted Tahir Mashadi, Pakistan's Senate Standing Committee on Sports member, as saying.

He also said that Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Ijaz Butt is under the scanner of the Standing Committee, which is keeping a close watch on the affairs of the board.

"Something is wrong in the PCB, definitely. It needs to be right, especially its chairman and people at the helm of affairs at the moment," Mashadi said.

Talking about the players involved in the controversy, Mashadi said" "Nothing should be done to spare those who are found guilty."

Pakistan fast bowlers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir, along with captain Salman Butt, have been accused by a British tabloid of intentionally bowling 'no-balls' during the fourth Test against England at Lord's.

The International Cricket Council had earlier said that the trio had been provisionally suspended pending a decision on the charges.

"In accordance with the provisions of the code, this means they are immediately barred from participating in all cricket and related activities until the case has been concluded," the ICC had said in a statement. (ANI)
