Belgian pursuit team working the boards
Most pursuit teams bring 5 riders in case someone gets sick or injured. This
happens quite often, and the endurance riders (except for the really large teams
like AUS or ENG) tend to do the scratch /points/ madison races as well. In any
event, the 5th rider will usually ride in a prelim heat, saving a ringer for the
final.

LONG BEACH MEMORIAL MEDICAL CENTER NAMED OFFICIAL HOSPITAL
UCI TRACK CYCLING WORLD CUP CLASSICS AT
THE HOME DEPOT CENTER THIS WEEKEND
Partnership Highlighted by USA Cycling Track Cyclists Visit to Hospital
Wednesday
Long Beach Memorial Medical Center is the official hospital for the 2006 UCI
Track Cycling World Cup Classics this weekend at the ADT Event Center at The
Home Depot Center. Four members of the USA Cycling national team will visit the
Millers Children’s Hospital today. Miller Children’s is located on the campus of
Long Beach Memorial Medical Center.
“Long Beach Memorial Medical Center has been a supporter of other Home Depot
Center events and for the first time, we are proud to call them our official
partners for the World Cup,” says Bill Peterson, AEG (owner and operator of The
Home Depot Center) senior vice president.
The hospital, located less than 10 miles from The Home Depot Center, will be the
exclusive hospital for the second annual event in Carson. As part of the
agreement, the hospital will provide all medical staff for the three-day event
featuring the world’s top cyclists. The staff will operate the anti-doping
testing, and will also provide a doctor during event hours in the infield of the
250-meter cycling track.
“The rehabilitation team at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center is headed by
physicians who understand the rigors of professional sports,” says Eric Feldman,
MD, medical director, Memorial Rehabilitation Center at Long Beach Memorial
Medical Center. “Long Beach Memorial’s multi-disciplinary team provides
comprehensive care for athletes to ensure a quick recovery and long professional
career. As a leader in orthopedic and rehabilitation medicine, we specialize in
getting athletes back in the game when they are sidelined by an injury.”
To highlight the partnership, five USA cyclists will visit Miller Children’s
Hospital today. The 281-bed hospital cares for children of all ages, from
newborns to young adults, as well as expectant mothers.
U.S. cyclists visiting the hospital include Athens Olympian and Pan-Am sprint
champion Giddeon Massie (Spike); local rider and 2004 Junior World Championships
medalist Michael Blatchford from Cypress, California; four-time U.S. criterion
champion who will make her international track race debut at the World Cup this
weekend at The Home Depot Center Tina Pic; and professional cycling Sima Trapp,
also racing in this weekend’s World Cup. Accompanying the riders will be Pat
McDonough, USA Cycling’s director of track programming.
